Upper Texas Gulf Coast planting calendar

The Houston-Galveston coast is humid and subtropical, with long hot summers and short, mild winters; freezes come only some years, and later inland than on the coast. There are two main vegetable seasons, spring and fall, with cool-season crops growing through winter.

What to plant each month in Upper Texas Gulf Coast

Spring planting of warm-season crops starts around March once the late-February-to-early-March freeze risk is past, and heat-loving crops such as okra, southern peas, sweet potatoes and melons keep going into early summer. Midsummer heat and humidity stop most planting, but tomatoes, peppers, beans and squash are set out again in late July and August for fall. Cool-season crops are planted from mid-September through autumn and again in January-February; plants over winter may need cover during the occasional freeze. The months below follow the planting calendar for Upper Texas Gulf Coast from the Cooperative Extension sources listed.
