Zoysiagrass is a warm-season grass for the South and the transition zone. In colder zones most varieties do not survive the winter, so the dates there apply only to the most cold-tolerant varieties.

Where frost is rare

In Florida, seed from April to July so the lawn has a full growing season before winter; fall seeding is discouraged in north Florida. Manilagrass (Z. matrella) types have poor cold tolerance and suit only central and south Florida. In California, warm-season sod does best laid in mid to late spring, and plugs and sprigs in late spring to early summer.
