St. Augustinegrass is a warm-season grass for the South and the transition zone. In colder zones most varieties do not survive the winter, so the dates there apply only to the most cold-tolerant varieties.

Where frost is rare

Where frost is rare it can be planted year-round. UF/IFAS rates late fall, winter or spring as the best establishment time in south Florida, while central and north Florida should avoid cold winter and hot, dry summer months. In California, warm-season sod does best laid in mid to late spring. Floratam has the poorest cold tolerance and suits southern Texas and the Gulf Coast.
