Where frost is rare
In North Florida, UF/IFAS lists oregano with the heat-loving herbs in April-May and again in October. South Florida suggests starting it from small plants in summer, when it is too hot for most herb seeds. In Tucson, plant it Oct-Nov or Feb-Apr and protect it from frost. Wet, poorly drained soil causes root rot in humid climates.
| Zone | Planting months in Extension guides |
|---|---|
| Zone 9 | Feb-Apr and Oct-Nov (Tucson, AZ); Apr-May and Oct (North FL) |
| Zone 10 | Jul, from small plants (South FL) |
Based on UF/IFAS EDIS gardening calendars: North FL (EP451) Apr, May, Oct; South FL (EP452) Jul (start from small plants). The Central FL calendar (EP450) does not name oregano, and the South FL June entry for 'Cuban oregano' is a different plant (Plectranthus), so it was not used. The calendars list example herbs for each month, not complete windows. University of Arizona AZ2061 Growing Herbs in Tucson table: oregano Oct-Nov and Feb-Apr, protect from frost. zone_9 = Tucson + North FL (roughly zones 8b-9a); zone_10 = South FL. No Hawaii or zone 11 source found. Warm-winter areas are matched to zones approximately, so use the months for your region.
