When to Plant Azaleas
In the South, fall is the best time to plant azaleas: about 8 to 6 weeks before your first frost, so roots grow before the next summer's heat. Early spring is the other good window, and in cold climates it is the safer choice because fall-planted azaleas are prone to winter injury. Container azaleas can go in any time if you water them faithfully.

The short answer depends on your winter
Most azaleas are sold in containers, and container plants can technically be planted any time of year if they are watered well. The question is which season gives them the easiest start, and that depends on whether summer heat or winter cold is the bigger threat where you live.
In the South, summer heat is the danger, so fall planting wins. In the North, winter cold is the danger, so spring wins.
Fall planting in the South
Clemson and Mississippi State both favor fall in the Southeast. A fall-planted azalea has the whole cool season to grow roots into the surrounding soil, so it meets its first hot summer already established. Illinois Extension’s rule for fall-planted shrubs is about six weeks before the first frost, not later, and the chart above runs from about 8 weeks to 6 weeks before your average first frost. The dates for your zone above turn that into a calendar window.
The only drawback Clemson notes is that you cannot see the plant in bloom when you buy in fall. In exchange, you skip the summer watering struggle that spring plantings face.
Do not push the plant with fertilizer at fall planting. Clemson warns that high-nitrogen fertilizer in late fall can delay dormancy and lead to cold injury. A light organic, acid-forming fertilizer mixed into the soil is the most it should get.
Spring planting
Early spring is the other good window, and it is when most azaleas are bought, in bloom. Mississippi State groups early spring with fall as the times that let roots establish before summer. The catch is water: Clemson says spring plantings need special attention to get through their first summer, and in sandy soil they may need watering twice a week.
Timing by region
Southeast and mid-South (zones 7 to 8). Fall is best, early spring second, following Clemson in South Carolina and Mississippi State. Plant in the window shown for your zone above.
Gulf Coast and Houston (zones 8b to 9). Harris County Extension, in the Houston area, calls early spring the best time to plant evergreen azaleas, with fall or January and February as options when the weather is mild. Local soils are usually too alkaline, so build raised, acidified beds before planting.
Florida. Azaleas suit North and Central Florida, where fall and early spring both work. UF/IFAS says they are not well suited to South Florida and suggests tropical vireya rhododendrons there.
Cold North (zones 5 to 6). Plant in early spring, before the shrub leafs out. Iowa State says this is the best time to transplant an azalea, which in Iowa means late March to mid-April, and warns that azaleas moved in fall are open to winter injury. Choose types rated hardy for your zone, since Iowa State notes most azaleas are not hardy there.
What happens if you plant too early or too late
A spring azalea planted late, after the weather has turned hot, has had little time to root before summer. Its shallow roots dry out fast, so soak the soil 6 to 8 inches deep whenever the top few inches feel dry.
A fall azalea planted too late in a cold climate has little time to root before the ground freezes, and Iowa State’s warning about winter injury applies. That is why the chart above stops about six weeks before the first frost, as Illinois Extension advises. Whatever the region, keep a fall planting mulched and watered in dry spells.
Whatever the season, the planting itself matters as much as the date: set the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the ground, in acid, well-drained soil. See how to grow azaleas for soil preparation and care.
Where frost is rare
UF/IFAS says azaleas suit North and Central Florida. For South Florida it suggests tropical relatives such as Vireya rhododendrons. In Houston (Harris County, Texas), early spring is the best time to plant evergreen azaleas, with fall or January-February as alternatives when weather allows. Local soils there are usually too alkaline, so beds are amended and raised for drainage.

Questions
Is it OK to plant azaleas in summer?
Container azaleas will survive summer planting if you water them carefully, since their shallow roots dry out fast. Spring and summer plantings need the most attention to watering through the first hot season.
Should I buy azaleas in bloom in spring?
Most people do, and it lets you see the color. Clemson notes the trade-off: spring plantings need careful watering to get through their first summer, while fall plantings root in before the heat.
When should I plant azaleas in Houston or the Gulf Coast?
Harris County Extension says early spring is best for evergreen azaleas in the Houston area, with fall or January and February as alternatives when the weather allows.
